Cristian Romero Targeted by Inter and Barcelona
New Clubs Eye Argentine Defender
Italian champions Inter and Spanish giants Barcelona have both expressed interest in signing Cristian Romero, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 28‑year‑old centre‑back is linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur, where his contract runs until June 2029. Romero has grown frustrated by Tottenham’s struggles, which have left the club battling relegation this season.
Sportitalia previously reported that Romero is pushing for an exit this summer, adding fuel to the speculation. His desire to leave comes as he seeks a fresh challenge after several seasons in England. The buzz around his potential transfer has spread across Europe, attracting attention from top clubs.
Internazionale’s Interest Grows
Romero’s name came up during negotiations between Inter and Tottenham over Djed Spence, Romano says on his Italian YouTube channel. In those talks, Tottenham reportedly suggested that Inter consider Romero as a target. The Nerazzurri are on the lookout for an experienced centre‑back, and Romero’s Argentine heritage aligns well with the club’s existing South American talent, including Lautaro Martínez and vice‑president Javier Zanetti.
Having spent time in Serie A with Genoa, Juventus and Atalanta, Romero knows the league’s style and its demands. His €53.8 million move to Tottenham in the summer of 2021 demonstrated his growing reputation as a top‑defensive talent. This familiarity could make him an attractive acquisition for Inter, who value seasoned campaigners in the back line.
Barcelona Adds Competition
Despite Inter’s genuine interest, Romano points out that a move is not straightforward. The financial cost of bringing Romero to Italy remains high, and Barcelona have entered the race, complicating any potential deal. The Spanish club’s involvement shows how Romero’s reputation has elevated him into a major transfer target across two of Europe’s toughest leagues.
If Inter succeed, they would strengthen a back line that already boasts a strong Argentine influence. Should Barcelona win the race, they would bolster a defensive unit that includes veteran centre‑backs and aim to shore up their chances in domestic and European competitions. Both clubs see Romero as a potential upgrade, yet his wage demands and the presence of rival bidders may keep his future uncertain for now.
