Steve Bonds Inducted into Texas Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame

HONOR RECOGNIZES DECADES OF EXCELLENCE

Steve Bonds, the veteran coach behind Flour Bluff’s tennis program, has been named to the Texas Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class of 2026. He joins two other honorees—Terri Rambie of Uvalde and Jack Gregory of Robinson—as the association prepares to celebrate the trio at its annual convention in December. Bonds’ induction caps a career that has left an indelible mark on high‑school tennis across South Texas.

Since taking the reins at Flour Bluff in 2003, Bonds has guided the Hornets to 17 district championships and secured 13 appearances in the UIL State Tennis Tournament. His leadership has transformed the program into a regional powerhouse, highlighted by a remarkable 26‑1 run last season that ended in a state‑final runner‑up finish. This achievement marked only the second time a Corpus Christi school advanced to the Class 5A championship game.

STUNNING INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES

Freshman Victoria Diaz made her mark at the UIL state meet, earning a silver medal in girls’ singles competition. Meanwhile, two of Flour Bluff’s boys doubles teams also reached the tournament’s elite field, adding depth to the Hornets’ medal haul. These individual successes underscore Bonds’ ability to develop talent at every level of the lineup.

Bonds’ coaching résumé stretches far beyond Flour Bluff, including stints at El Campo (1991‑94) and Amarillo High (1994‑2003). Combined with his 23 years at Corpus Christi, the total experience spans three decades of high‑school tennis across disparate regions of Texas.
