Steve Yzerman’s Trade That Sank the Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings Set New Direction with Upcoming GM Change

Yzerman’s Era Ends

The Detroit Red Wings will have a new general manager for the 2026‑27 season, as current GM Steve Yzerman transitions to a new front office role. Yzerman took charge in 2019 and immediately began a rebuild that fans hoped would bring the Wings back to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Though Detroit steadily improved with Yzerman in charge, drafting franchise cornerstones like Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider and acquiring Alex DeBrincat, the Red Wings stretched their postseason drought to 10 years under his stewardship.

2025‑26 Season Recap

The Red Wings looked to break the drought in the 2025‑26 season, finishing with 92 points—the most under Yzerman. A brutal finish that included six losses in their last seven games doomed Detroit to another playoff‑less finish. The disappointing run sparked questions about Yzerman’s leadership and sparked a trade request from team captain Dylan Larkin.

The Trade Request

Captain Dylan Larkin’s desire for a move added another layer of uncertainty during a season that already fell short of expectations. The request underscored player discontent with the direction of the franchise as the 2025‑26 campaign drew to a close. This development will be a key factor for the incoming general manager when shaping the roster for the 2026‑27 season.

Coaching Turnover

In June 2022 the Red Wings hired Tampa Bay Lightning assistant Derek Lalonde, ending a long tenure with two previous coaches. Lalonde’s inexperience showed as the Red Wings missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons from 2022‑24. Yzerman didn’t wait until the end of the next season to find his new man, firing Lalonde in December 2024 and hiring Todd McLellan, which yielded better results despite another missed‑playoffs finish.

Costly Free‑Agent Signing

The Red Wings signed forward J.T. Compher to a five‑year deal with a $5.1 million AAV ahead of the 2023‑24 season, giving him the third most‑expensive contract on the team at the time. Compher posted 48 points in 77 games in his debut season in Detroit, but his production dipped to 32 points in 2024‑25 and 28 points in 2025‑26 despite consistent playing time. The declining output makes this one of Yzerman’s least productive free‑agent signings and a burden for the next two seasons.

Mantha Trade Fallout

The former Detroit 2013 first‑round pick Anthony Mantha had a solid but unspectacular first few seasons before his trade in 2021 for Czech forward Jakub Vrána, Richard Pánik and two draft picks. The first‑round pick the Red Wings acquired later became goalie Sebastian Cossa, who made one career appearance before being traded to the Utah Mammoth. Vrána and Pánik both exited the league after disappointing runs, while Mantha scored a career‑high 64 points for the Pittsburgh Penguins this past season after stops elsewhere. This trade has not delivered the expected return for Detroit.

Deadline Missteps

The Red Wings sent Justin Holl, prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov, and two 2026 draft picks (a first and a third‑rounder) to the St. Louis Blues for veteran Faulk, who appeared in 17 games for Detroit down the stretch. Detroit was 35‑21‑7 before the trade and 6‑10‑3 after, illustrating the misstep at the deadline. Even if Faulk can recapture the All‑Star form he showed with Carolina early in his career, sending a first‑round pick for a limited contribution looks very poor for Red Wings fans.
