Suni Lee Returns to USA Gymnastics for 2028 Olympics
Olympic Medal Record Leading the Way
USA Gymnastics confirmed on Tuesday that Suni Lee will rejoin the national team for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Her résumé already includes two Games: Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. In Tokyo she captured gold in the all‑around, added a silver in the team event, and won bronze on the uneven bars.
Paris 2024 brought another gold in the team competition, followed by bronze medals in both the all‑around and the uneven bars. Those six medals cement Lee as one of the most decorated gymnasts of her generation.
Health Battle Prompts a Comeback Narrative
The Olympic gymnast faced a serious health scare when she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in 2023. Even after medaling three times in Paris, speculation arose that the 2024 Games might be her final appearance.
Lee’s determination to compete again became evident in April 2024, when she announced the disease was in remission and she could resume full training. A relapse before the 2024 Olympic trials was managed with an infusion, allowing her to secure a spot on Team USA.
Documentary to Chronicle Her Journey
Beyond her athletic comeback, Lee is set to star in a documentary about her experience. The film will be produced by Fanatics Studios, the same outfit also handling the 2026 ESPY Awards. In her own words, “This is more than a documentary; it’s an invitation to come along for the journey. I know there’s more in me, and this is my chance to challenge myself, test my limits, and see what I’m truly capable of.”
The project underscores her desire to push past setbacks and showcase what is possible when an athlete keeps going despite obstacles.
Commitment to 2028 Ends with a Fresh Promise
USA Gymnastics wrapped up the announcement with Lee’s closing line: “This is more than a comeback, stay tuned.” Her focus now is clear—preparing for Los Angeles 2028 while continuing to prove that health challenges do not define an athlete’s trajectory.
If Lee can replicate the medal‑winning consistency of her early Olympic years, the U.S. team will gain a powerful asset as it eyes its first Olympic gymnastics lineup for 2028.
