Record‑Setting Speed Who Changed the Titans

Chris Johnson ranks among only nine players to rush for 2,000+ yards in a single season, a feat he delivered in 2009 for the Tennessee franchise. Selected 24th overall by the Titans in the 2008 draft, Johnson spent six seasons with Nashville, posting at least 1,000 rushing yards every year. His 2,009 campaign included 2,006 rushing yards, 14 touchdowns, 50 receptions and more than 500 receiving yards.

Beyond the numbers, Johnson earned three Pro Bowl honors and became a fan favorite, prompting Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk to call him “a leader in our record books.” The team will celebrate his legacy at halftime of the season‑opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 13, inducting him into the Titans Ring of Honor under the banner “CJ2K Forever.”

Facing ALS While Staying Active

Last month, the 40‑year‑old Johnson disclosed during an interview with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America that he has been diagnosed with ALS. He now communicates using eye‑controlled speech‑generating technology and says he has chosen to “fight” rather than give up. He has pursued experimental treatments and continues to advocate for research.

Johnson and his family have revived the Ice Bucket Challenge, enlisting former running backs Marshawn Lynch and Edgerrin James to raise awareness. James added a cash twist, showering himself with $9,651—symbolizing his 2009 career rushing total—to support Johnson’s cause.

Financial Support for a Noble Cause

The donation from James highlights how Johnson’s former teammates are rallying behind him. The $9,651 figure directly ties to the yardage that earned James his 2009 NFL Offensive Player of the Year honor. Together with Lynch’s participation, the campaign aims to fund ALS research and aid patients.
