UNC Quarterback Battle Set for Summer Battle
Bill Belichick will continue to weigh his four options at quarterback as the Tar Heels open official practice on Thursday, July 30. The roster reflects a complete overhaul after a 4‑8 debut season under the new coach. Only Au’Tori Newkirk returns from last year’s squad, while the other spots are filled by two transfers and a highly touted freshman. The competition will be the focal point as the program seeks to find a leader in the clubhouse.
Billy Edwards Jr. – Wisconsin Transfer Leads Race
Red‑shirt No. 9, Edwards is a 6‑ft‑3, 228‑lb graduate student who transferred in from Wisconsin. He started 11 games for Maryland in 2024, averaging 261.9 passing yards per game—second in the Big Ten. Edwards completed 2,881 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions before a left‑knee injury shortened his Badgers stint. Belichick praised his ability to “get an equal opportunity” and noted his familiarity with the offense after a solid spring.
During the April “Practice Like A Pro” scrimmage, Edwards’ presence signaled he is the early favorite for the starting role. His experience as a Big Ten passer and the injury history make him a compelling contender as camp approaches. The season opener is slated for Aug. 29 against TCU in Ireland.
Miles O’Neill – Texas A&M Transfer Fuels Competition
O’Neill checks in at 6‑ft‑5, 220 lb and is a redshirt sophomore from Massachusetts. He saw action in seven games for Texas A&M, compiling 120 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. A four‑star recruit out of Hun High School, he earned 2023 Gatorade Player of the Year honors in New Jersey. Belichick highlighted his clean‑slate opportunity, saying the job is wide open for O’Neill.
His elite high‑school pedigree and recent exposure to a Power‑Five program give him a strong résumé. The spread of his skill set adds depth to the quarterback room and keeps the competition tight. As the camp progresses, O’Neill’s growth will be a key metric for the coaching staff.
Au’Tori Newkirk – Returning Lone Option
Newkirk is the only returning quarterback from last year’s roster and knows the ACC landscape. He appeared in two games as a freshman, capping his debut with a 4‑yard touchdown pass to Jordan Owens at N.C. State. Pro Football Focus recorded 14 snaps for him in the 2025 season. As the veteran presence, Newkirk brings continuity to the position group.
His experience will be valuable as the team moves beyond the spring evaluation period. Newkirk’s comfort with UNC’s terminology will help the other newcomers acclimate quickly. Belichick’s comment that “there’s no leader in the clubhouse right now” underscores the fluid nature of the battle.
Travis Burgess – Freshman Sensation Joins Mix
Burgess is a 6‑ft‑4, 193‑lb true freshman from Grayson High School in Georgia and participated in the Elite 11 Finals. He underwent knee‑repair surgery in September 2025 but showed no limitation during the media‑open portion of spring practice in late March. As a four‑star signee, he is part of a class that includes nearly 40 newcomers for UNC.
Belichick noted his “good follow‑up” after the spring, indicating he is progressing toward contributing this fall. Burgess’ arm strength and poise could make him a surprise contender in the quarterback shuffle. His development will be closely watched throughout the offseason as the Tar Heels prepare for the season.
The quarterback race remains wide open, and each player brings a distinct attribute to the table. Fans can expect the competition to intensify through training camp and into the Aug. 29 season‑opening matchup against TCU. The eventual starter will be the catalyst for UNC’s resurgence after a rebuilding year.
