Medical Clearance Fuels Steelers’ Safety Hope

The Steelers have reshaped their secondary this off‑season, but the safety spot still looks thin as the season approaches. Jordan Whitehead, a Pittsburgh‑area native, has been fully cleared after neck surgery and is now on the radar for a roster spot. He recently worked out for the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans, with more team visits expected.

Whitehead would join DeShon Elliott and Jaquan Brisker in the defensive backfield, while Jalen Ramsey adds flexibility to the mix. Elliott’s recurring injury history leaves Pittsburgh vulnerable if another hamstring issue arises. The lack of a proven free safety behind the trio means the Steelers could be exposed if a single injury sidelines a key player.

Veteran Depth Added with Darnell Savage

To shore up the position, the Steelers signed Darnell Savage to a one‑year deal, providing veteran insurance. Whitehead’s résumé, however, is deeper, reflecting a career of consistent play. Over 105 games and 101 starts, he posted 557 tackles, 45 pass deflections, 11 interceptions, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two recoveries.

His best seasons include 97 tackles and four interceptions in 2023, nine pass breakups in both 2019 and 2023, and two sacks in 2020. The Aliquippa native also earned a Super Bowl ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his time with the team.

Potential Reunion with Jamel Dean

Whitehead is currently meeting with several teams, so Pittsburgh should act quickly to bring him back alongside former teammate Jamel Dean. Reuniting the duo could restore chemistry on the backthird of the defense. Given his experience and proven play, Whitehead could provide the stability the Steelers need at safety as they head into the regular season.
