Vikings Look to Strengthen Linebacking Corps

The Minnesota Vikings consider their defense the backbone of the roster under coordinator Brian Flores. The secondary has traditionally carried the load, but today’s NFL demands more depth and versatility at linebacker. To address that, the team retained Eric Wilson and still fields Blake Cashman while exploring other options.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox recently highlighted veteran linebacker Kyle Van Noy as a potential fit. Van Noy brings 12 years of NFL experience, having moved from a versatile role with the New England Patriots to a specialized pass‑rusher for the Baltimore Ravens. In three seasons with Baltimore he recorded 23.5 sacks and 54 quarterback pressures.

Knox argues Van Noy’s flexibility could complement the Vikings’ hybrid linebacker play, similar to the role Ivan Pace Jr. has filled. Adding Van Noy would give Minnesota a proven edge rusher who can also settle in coverage against the division’s top running backs.

Targeting Division RBs with a New Edge

North Carolina’s D’Andre Swift, Nevada’s Josh Jacobs and Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs have proven difficult to contain this season. Van Noy’s ability to rush the passer and hold opponents in space could limit the yardage these backs gain. The Vikings’ defense aims to generate more pressure and create turnovers by adding another disruptive presence.

While the Vikings have anchored their linebacking with Eric Wilson and Blake Cashman, Van Noy offers an upgrade in pass‑rushing production and versatility. If signed, he could fill the middle‑edge hybrid spot and give coordinator Brian Flores an extra tool to attack both the run and the pass.

Taking a veteran who has thrived in multiple systems fits the Vikings’ strategy heading into the 2026 campaign. The move would show the team is willing to invest in experience to improve a unit that has been a key to their defensive success. The Vikings will hope the new acquisition translates into on‑field impact during training camp and the regular season.
