From Elite Recruit to Hospital Bed

Zerek Sidney, a four‑star wide receiver from Desert Edge High School, pledged to the Washington Huskies in late January after being hailed as one of the nation’s top prospects. Yet before his commitment, he had taken the field in only one junior season and spent weeks in a hospital fighting an illness that baffled doctors. “We don’t know what it is; we’re just scared,” Sidney told ABC15’s Javier Soto, describing rapid weight loss and the dread of the unknown. The uncertainty ended when Valley Fever—a fungal infection common in Arizona’s desert soil—was identified as the culprit. Months of treatment have cleared him to resume his senior season.
