Worthing faces Carlisle in National League opener

Worthing Makes History as National League Opener at Carlisle

Newly‑promoted Worthing will kick off the 2026‑27 National League season away at Carlisle United on Saturday, 8 August – the Rebels’ first ever match in the fifth tier. The club celebrates a 140‑year wait to reach the non‑league summit after winning the National League South title last term.

The trip to Carlisle promises a 720‑mile round‑trip and could see up to 17,000 fans at Brunton Park, a stark contrast to the average 1,300‑strong crowds the club has been used to in National League South. For Worthing, this is the culmination of a meteoric rise from the eighth tier in 2016.

New Leadership at Carlisle United

Carlisle are in their second season back in the National League after relegation from League Two, and have appointed former Gateshead boss Rob Elliot as head coach, replacing Mark Hughes. The Cumbrians aim to build on last season’s performance under new management.

Elliot brings a reputation for promoting attacking football, a shift from the more defensive approach of his predecessor. His first marquee fixture will be the opener against a seasoned Worthing side.

Hornchurch’s Fifth Tier Return After 145 Years

Hornchurch, who secured promotion via the National League South play‑offs, will also make their fifth‑tier debut since the original club’s era 145 years ago. The promotion caps a remarkable three‑year stretch that included two promotions under manager Daryl McMahon.

The club will host Kidderminster Harriers in their home opener, playing at the smallest ground in the division – Hornchurch Stadium with a 3,500‑capacity. Former West Ham United defender Anton Ferdinand joins the coaching staff, adding experienced back‑line insight ahead of the new campaign.

Off the field, the rise has already captured media interest, highlighted by a striking photograph of McMahon holding the National League South play‑off trophy.

Full Opening‑Day Fixtures

All 15 National League fixtures kick off at 15:00 BST on Saturday 8 August. The line‑up includes AFC Fylde versus Wealdstone, Altrincham against Southend United, and the other clash highlighted by Boreham Wood hosting Tamworth.

Mid‑Season Highlights and Play‑off Path

The regular season ends on Saturday 24 April 2027, leaving teams placed second to seventh to battle for the final promotion spot. The play‑off final is set for Wembley the weekend of 8 May, capping a seven‑month campaign that includes a return fixture for Worthing at Forest Green Rovers on 15 August.

Other notable fixtures include Harrogate Town hosting Solihull Moors, Hartlepool United welcoming Barrow, and the all‑National League North champions AFC Fylde hosting Wealdstone – a repeat of the season‑opener.
