Powell posted an 18‑point outing in Brooklyn’s 115‑83 victory over Sacramento on Tuesday night. He drained six of ten field‑goal attempts, including four triples out of seven attempts, and converted his only free‑throw attempt. The performance marked a career‑best scoring night for the second‑year NBA player and gave Nets fans a glimpse of his offensive upside.

Draft Journey and Rookie Season

Originally selected 22nd overall by the Atlanta Hawks, Powell was immediately dealt to Brooklyn as part of the Draft Day trade. During his rookie campaign he averaged 6.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists across 63 games, starting 24 of them. His free‑throw shooting was elite at 89.6 percent, yet the Nets missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year. The trade to Brooklyn set the stage for Powell’s continued development in a new city.  

Net Changes and Minutes Competition

The offseason saw Brooklyn add Julius Randle via trade and select point guard Mikel Brown sixth overall, while retaining former Tar Heel Day’Ron Sharpe. These upgrades push Powell to battle for valuable court time in a deeper roster. The increased competition is expected to sharpen his defensive instincts and refine his outside shooting. If he secures a role, the team’s overall success could improve after three losing campaigns.  

Looking Ahead for Year Two

Entering his sophomore season, Powell is eager to build on the Summer League spark and become a reliable NBA contributor. He still carries strong ties to North Carolina, having grown up in Chapel Hill and played high school ball at Northwood. With a solid rookie season behind him and a fresh offensive showcase, Powell aims to cement his place in Brooklyn’s rotation and help the franchise break its playoff drought. The next few months will be the measuring stick for his progress.
