Hines Ward’s Coaching Journey at Arizona State
Steele Curtain Legend Takes the Helm
The Pittsburgh Steelers history hall of fame, Hines Ward, spent 1998‑2011 as one of the league’s most reliable receivers and a feared tough threat. Between 2001 and 2004 he earned four straight Pro Bowl invites and was a Second‑Team All‑Pro each year from 2002‑04. Ward’s defining moment came in 2005 when he caught the game‑sealing touchdown in Super Bowl XL, earning MVP honors as the Steelers captured the franchise’s sixth championship.
From the Field to the Sidelines
After helping the Steelers win a second title of the decade with a fifth 1,000‑yard season in 2008, Ward turned his attention to coaching. He interned with the Steelers in 2017, then served as an offensive assistant for the New York Jets from 2019‑20. Ward moved to the college ranks as the wide‑receivers coach at Florida Atlantic in 2021 before stepping up to a head‑coach role with the UFL’s San Antonio Brahmas.
This fall marks Ward’s third season at Arizona State, where he holds the dual roles of wide‑receivers coach and associate head coach. In a recent episode of the Yinziders Podcast, Ward recalled his player‑days habit of running drills: “As a player, I was always running all our drills… I got it covered… I was always kind taking a bull by its horn.”
Coaching Life and Moving On
Ward also reflected on the uncertainty of coaching staff positions. “There’s certain things that I can’t control… if a staff gets fired, the whole staff gets fired. So you have to move on to the next chapter,” he said. The rapid turnover in the profession is something every coach must accept, he added, noting that his own career path includes several moves in the last decade.
Shaping the Next Crop of Pass Catchers
Arizona State just saw wide receiver Jordyn Tyson taken eighth overall by the New Orleans Saints, a development Ward hopes will ignite his pupils. “I try to give them the blueprints of kind of what it takes to maintain… it comes to work ethic,” he explained. “Are you outworking everyone? I have a saying that kind of just stayed with me – You can’t have professional dreams with playground habits.” Ward stresses that elite daily habits outweigh raw talent alone.
Season Opener Against Morgan State
The Sun Devils open their schedule on September 5 against Morgan State, a game that will give Ward’s receivers an early chance to put his philosophy into practice. With his playing pedigree and coaching experience, Ward aims to replicate the discipline that made him a Pro Bowl standout. Fans can expect a fast‑paced contest as Arizona State looks to build on the momentum generated by former players like Tyson.
