R Ashwin Hits Back At Pressure On Sooryavanshi’s UK Tour

Ashwin Questions India’s Social Media‑Driven Selection of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

R Ashwin has raised serious doubts about whether India’s recent T20I squad choices were driven by cricketing merit or by online hype. The 15‑year‑old debutant, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, earned his place in the Ireland‑England tour but Ashwin believes he was rushed into the side.

Ashwin’s Concerns Over Sooryavanshi’s Debut

Sooryavanshi made his T20I bow in the second match of the five‑game series against England. He top‑scored 14, 13 and 15 in three appearances before being omitted for the final fixture. Ashwin says the youngster deserved selection but should have been given more time to adjust. He spoke on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat about the pressure that can come from social media.

“I’m still telling you, Vaibhav Suryavanshi is an incredible player. If I were the selector, I would have also picked him. But let him take his time. This is called an internship, right?” Ashwin said. He also warned that allowing outside noise to dictate selections could harm the team’s stability.

Internship Analogy and Social Media Pressure

According to Ashwin, tours should act like internships, giving young players a gradual learning curve instead of throwing them straight into high‑stakes matches. He drew a parallel to his own career, noting that he was left out of an England tour despite good form. “I came to England with very good form, but the coach and captain spoke to me, and then I felt maybe they were doing it for the combination they wanted,” he recalled.

Ashwin also questioned how a team functions when external pressure is allowed to influence decisions. “It is the team’s decision. The team management is like a temple. If the outside noise is allowed to enter the team, whose fault is it? How can the outside pressure disturb the team? If the outside pressure is disturbing the team management, then think about the players,” he observed.

Why India’s Rotating XI May Be Costly

During the series, India made constant changes to their playing eleven, which Ashwin labeled as inconsistent. “The point is, when you are winning, there is no challenge; the team and the players will perform automatically. But when the team loses, I’m looking at it from this perspective,” he noted. He pointed out that Sanju Samson was frequently swapped with Sooryavanshi and vice‑versa.

From the first match against Ireland to the final game, the lineup shifted after every defeat. “Sanju Samson out, Vaibhav Suryavanshi in, Vaibhav Suryavanshi out, Sanju Samson in,” Ashwin highlighted. He believes such volatility prevents a team from finding rhythm and identity.

The Need for a Clear Development Pathway

For long‑term growth, young talents like Sooryavanshi require a structured pathway rather than reactive selection driven by short‑term results. Ashwin’s critique underscores the importance of balancing merit with patience. Indian cricket fans and selectors must consider whether social media trends are overshadowing the careful nurturing of future stars.

Keeping a measured approach to selections will help India build a consistent side that can thrive on the international stage without being swayed by fleeting online opinions.
