Giants Call Up Grant McCray, Bring Back Keaton Winn

New Outfield Addition After Victor Bericoto’s Oblique Strain

The San Francisco Giants placed Victor Bericoto on the 10‑day injured list due to an oblique strain, opening a roster spot for 25‑year‑old Grant McCray. McCray, who missed the season after June surgery to repair a left hamate bone, returns to the majors for the first time in 2026. Before the injury, he was hitting just .237/.360/.370, but his debut stint includes four hits in eight at‑bats, a home run, a double, a strikeout, a walk, and three stolen bases without being caught.

Defensively, McCray will provide depth in center and right field, joining Jung Hoo Lee and Drew Gilbert on the outfield roster. His bat remains the primary question mark, especially compared with Bericoto’s productive swing. In 59 plate appearances, Bericoto posted 4 homers and 3 doubles with a 15‑to‑1 strikeout‑to‑walk ratio, while his 2024 slash line of .293/.305/.552 dwarfs McCray’s .202/.238/.379 from the same season.

Keaton Winn Returns to the Mound After a Short IL Stint

Keaton Winn, who had been seemingly lost to the injury list, returns after a brief absence. He landed on the IL on June 8, rehabbed through July 3, and logged three minor‑league appearances. During those games, Winn struck out three times, walked twice, and allowed only a single hit across three innings.

His Giants minor‑league line of a 2.40 ERA (3.21 FIP) over 30 innings had hinted at a solid setup role, prompting the club to replace Ryan Walker’s struggling arm with Winn. Carson Whisenhunt is demoted to make room, though Alex Pavlovic noted the All‑Star break would have kept Whisenhunt out of the rotation for at least a week anyway.

Winn is considered a potential 20‑on‑the‑20‑80 scale pitcher, but the team needs a few strong outings to justify a possible trade before the August 3 deadline. As the season winds down, the Giants are banking on both McCray’s defensive versatility and Winn’s resurgence to salvage what has been a difficult campaign.
